Character - Danny

Character - Danny
Actor - Roddy Thompson

Age - Just 18 - It's His Party

Profile
Recently broke up with Sam although his motives aren't entirely clear. presents a calm and fairly macho persona which could be described at times as selfish. However as is revealed through the piece has deep seated fear about the future that he hasn't really addressed until now. Misses Sam but won't admit it as he wants to "win" this break up.... whatever that means. It is this desire that leads to him opening up to Sam ( which she is surprised by) . He isn't as confident as Sam is but is moved to action as he reacts to her conversation.

Costume
Naturalistic but definitive comfortable and simple. Typically masculine and fairly bland colour palette has dressed up somewhat but not to any great degree and his clothes are rather crumpled because of his seemingly permanent residence on the sofa

Character - Sam

Character - Sam
Age - 18

Profile
Recently on the receiving end of a break up from Danny and thinks she's over it ( spoiler alert she really isn't). Still wants to be friends with Danny. Has shown up to this party with that express intention and is frustrated by him blanking her.  An eternal optimist especially when it comes to her relationship with Danny some would call this naivety but she tries to keep realistic about everything. She is a very confident person who isn't afraid to speak her mind.

Costume
There is a temptation to go for a feminine slant to this characters costume as this would juxtapose nicely with the  somewhat masculine attitude of the character. However I think it would work nicely to put her in simple jeans and a t-shirt (or some kind of variation on this). Instead of contrasting against her personality this would reinforce it,

Actor - Ottilie Nye
Age - 17

Location Recce

Below are a variety of shots from a recent recce I did in one possible shooting location. I will be producing another blog post breaking down these images into the scenes in which they will be used.

Representation

Gender
I have tried to avoid the usual tropes of a typical heterosexual relationship by making Sam, the female in the relationship the one who seems to be in control of the relationship while Danny is more emotional than a typical male character would be while still using some typical traits such as the fact that his is rather more dismissive and closed to outside conversation making him appear more surly and conservative than Sam

The issue I have encountered with analysing the representation of wider social constructs such as class and status is that the story takes place in a rather closed environment that, while the story does acknowledge wider events and because of this a wider universe this universe is not shown and so it is harder to reference the representation of class and status as these are not major factors in the story as all of the people in the piece are clearly of a similar social class and status. This does not mean that they are not factors in the characters development across the piece it just means that their Gender is probably the most important factor in their characters.

Script Notes 2

There are several things I would like to change about the second draft of the script that I recently posted.

Firstly I deleted the ending dialogue as I felt it was too cheesy this might have been a bit extreme to start from scratch but I think it was best as it would have felt odd otherwise as the two halves would have to be blended together which might cause issues

Secondly I want to further tweak the argument again as I still feel its lacking a certain amount of drama that is necessary at that point in the script this might be fixed by introducing a degree of foul language as this limited use would be effective but I must be careful as it might seem over the top if I use to much of it

Finally I wan to show it to the actors I have cast as I want the dialogue to be as realistic as possible and so I want them to feel comfortable with the dialogue and because of this I want them to comment on the lines and change them where necessary to increase this realism.

Genre Analysis - Coming of Age Films

Short Film
Genre - Coming of Age

The short film I have decided to create is based in the coming of age genre. This genre frequently blends elements of various different genres. Often they are a mixture of drama and comedy and then contain smaller elements of other genres such as tragedy. They are told almost exclusively from the perspective of a young adult from ages ranging from 16 to about 20 years old and tracks a change to their character across about a year on average. This formula has been applied to older characters but this is fairly rare.

Some examples of films in this genre

Edge of Seventeen
Perks of Being A Wall Flower
Juno
Breakfast Club
Boyhood
